Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan believes that the club are in desperate need of some strikers in order to top the table once again. After briefly dominating the Premier League, the club have slipped several points behind table leaders Leicester.

Manager Louis van Gaal is once again under pressure after watching his team go winless in the last five matches across all competitions. Aside from dropping from the top of the table into the fourth spot, United have also been knocked out of the Champions League and will have to play with Europa league football till the end of the season.

One of the primary reasons behind the poor form has been the inability to score goals. The team has often had to depend on the defence to come up with a clean sheet so as to help them get victories. In the last few weeks, though, United had managed a grand total of four goals in the five matches. More worryingly, two of those four goals came in the single game against West Brom, which even surprised many by ending in a 3-2 defeat.

Forlan represent United at a time when they had the best squad in the business. Van Gaal, though, only has Anthony Martial and Rooney as his best options.

"In my opinion I think they need to have more strikers.Rooney is a great player but he is getting older and is playing in every position. He can't play every game. In England, with all the competitions, you play more or less 60 or 65 games per year. So it is a lot of games. You travel a lot so you need more players. Maybe sometimes you will get more players injured so you won't have this player [available] for a couple of months,” said the former United striker.
