GIGGS SIGNS FOR ANOTHER YEAR

  • 20 February 2012

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs was recently awarded a one-year contract extension. Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that Ryan Giggs is a player who is worthy of the new contract he has signed with Manchester United.

The 38-year-old is one of the oldest players in the division, but continues to represent Manchester United at the highest level. He is the only player left in the division to have scored in every season of the Premier league since its inception. More than the records, Rio Ferdinand believes that it is the professionalism and the quality of Ryan Giggs that has made him worthy of the new contract.

Manchester United have been having the policy of shifting the older players in order to make way for the younger players. Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have been the two exceptions to the policy. Paul Scholes announced his retirement last season, but has returned to the team on the insistence of manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Ryan Giggs, however, continues to play on for Manchester United at the very top level. Rio Ferdinand is currently suffering a number of injury problems, which have put his Manchester United future in doubt, despite being much younger than Ryan Giggs.

“There’s no reduction in his talent. He’s still one of the better players in training and in games, and can play on both sides of the pitch during games. That tells you he’s not getting in because of who he is or what he’s done – he’s getting in the team on merit. He’s not carrying any weight, he’s not had any serious injuries ... he manages himself really well," Rio Ferdinand told the official website of Manchester United.

Manchester United are currently in the second place in the table, just two points behind leaders and archrivals Manchester City.
