Fergie: Carrick England Struggles

  • 22 July 2008

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says Michael Carrick may have to accept a bit-part role with Fabio Capello's England setup.

Fergie said: "If you look at the England set-up over the last few years it is correct that for all three of England's coaches, for Sven Goran Eriksson, for Steve McClaren and for Fabio Capello, they have more choice in central midfield than anywhere else.

"Over the years they have had to choose between Beckham, Lampard, Hargreaves, Joe Cole and now Barry has edged in. It makes it very difficult for the coach.

"Of course, you would like your players to be recognised by England but I have no gripe with Fabio given the options he has. We have our own problems selecting players for central midfield so I can understand Fabio's dilemma."
